What is the Translational Research Institute?
Due to open in Brisbane, Australia in 2012, the Translational Research Institute (TRI) will be a one-stop-shop for discovery, production, clinical testing and manufacturing of new biopharmaceuticals.
It will be the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and one of a handful in the world.
Two leading Australian scientists, former MMRI Director Professor Derek Hart and 2006 Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, are the driving force behind the TRI and its placement as a leading medical research hub for cancer and other diseases.
The facility has attracted $100M from the Federal and Queensland governments.

Benefits of the TRI
- Link tertiary education and independent medical research with health care to enable new discoveries to be refined, tested and manufactured with greater efficiency, and be available to patients sooner
- Potentially slash billions off global health care expenditure in the long term
- Provide significant economies of scale in research through greater collaboration
- Stem the flow of the ‘brain-drain’ by providing facilities to retain our top researchers and clinicians. Additionally, the facility would attract elite scientists from overseas institutes.
